Fred Emery (journalist)

Fred Emery (born 19 October 1933) is a British television investigative journalist, often for the BBC.

He was born in south-west Essex. He attended Bancroft's School in north-east London from 1944-51. He was head boy in 1951.

He covered a lot of the Vietnam War as a newspaper journalist. He was a foreign correspondent all over the world, often in known troublespots.

He was a presenter for Panorama throughout the 1980s. He interviewed Margaret Thatcher on 8 June 1983, on the eve of the 1983 general election. Much of British politics in the 1980s, often on Panorama, involved Margaret Thatcher. Panorama was taken to court (for slander) in October 1986 for having a perceived vendetta against some politicians in the Conservative Party, notably for aligning these politicians with supposed allegiances for the National Front or other forms of implied racist leanings. The BBC did not eventually contest the case and settled out of court.

He married Marianne Nyberg. They had a son on 25 March 1960 at the Royal Free Hospital in north London. He lives in Sydenham Hill on the southern edge of the London Borough of Southwark, off the A212, and near the South East London Green Chain or Green Chain Walk.
