Francis Annesley (1663–1750)


Francis Annesley, FRS (October 1663 – 7 April 1750) was a British Member of Parliament for Preston and Westbury.

He was born the eldest son of the Hon. Francis Annesley of Castlewellan, County Down and educated at Trinity College, Dublin where he qualified BA in 1682 and LL.B. and LL.D in 1725. He studied law at the Inner Temple, where he was called to the bar in 1690.

He was elected MP in the Parliament of Ireland in 1692, sitting until 1697, sat again briefly in 1703 and for a third time from 1713 to 1714. During this time he served as a Commissioner several times. In 1700 he became a Director of the New East India Company.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1704.

He was MP for Preston from 1705 to 1715 and for Westbury from 1708 to 1715 and from 1722 to 1734.

He died in 1750. He had married 3 times; firstly Elizabeth, the daughter of Joseph Martin, secondly Elizabeth, the daughter of John Cropley of Rochester, Kent and the widow of William Gomeldon of Summerfield Hall, Kent and thirdly Sarah, the daughter of William Sloane of Portsmouth, Hampshire and the widow of Sir Richard Fowler, 2nd Bt., of Harnage Grange, Shropshire. He had 7 sons and 2 daughters by his first wife.
