Fort Tantumquery is a military structure designed to facilitate the slave trade. It was built by the Royal African Company in the 1720s, at Otuam in the Mfantsiman Municipal District, Central Region, Ghana, in what was known at the time as the Gold Coast.
The fort was surveyed in 1727 by William Smith, who had been appointed to review their castles in Africa following disturbing reports that they were unprofitable. He described it as follows:
