Far Eastern Krai


Far Eastern Krai or Far Eastern Territory was an administrative subdivision of the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union during 1926–1938. Its capital was Khabarovsk.

The term may also informally refer to Russian Far East.

After the abolition of the buffer state of Far Eastern Republic in 1922 the Far Eastern Oblast was established with capital Chita (since 1924 the capital was Khabarovsk), which included the lands of FER and Amurskaya, Transbaikalskaya, Kamchatskaya, Priamurskaya, Primorskaya (with northern part of Sakhalin island) guberniyas (provinces). It also had right of way by the Chinese Eastern Railway. Geographically, it was an easternmost area of Asian Russia, bounded by the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean (Sea of Okhotsk and Sea of Japan), and by China.

In 1926 the Far Eastern Oblast was reorganized into the Far Eastern Krai with Amurski, Vladivostokski, Zeiski, Kamchatski, Nikolaevski, Sakhalinski, Sretenski, Khabarovski, Chitinski Okrugs.

On October 20, 1938 the Far Eastern Krai was divided into the Khabarovsk Krai and Primorski Krai.
