Extra-amniotic route

Extra-amniotic administration is a route of administration to the space between the fetal membranes and endometrium inside the uterus of a pregnant woman.

It can be used to administer drugs affecting uterus motility, such as and prostaglandins, e.g. in labor induction or medical abortion.

It can be performed using a catheter with a balloon that is inserted under direct vision through the cervix. The balloon is inflated with 30 ml of sterile water, allowing medication to be injected through the catheter into the extra-amniotic space.
