Escola Jorge Barbosa (Portuguese for Jorge Barbosa School) is a school located east of the city center of Mindelo. The school is named after Jorge Barbosa who was the greatest Cape Verdean writer of all time.
It is located on Avenida Fernando Ferreira Fortes and its buildings extends up to Rua Franz Fanon and is in between Rua Baltasar Lopes da Silva and a smaller street. Nearby buildings is the Palácio do Povo, also as the São Vicente Municipal Hall which is the headquarters of the island administration.
The building shape is in a square form but has two portions, the east wing with late colonial architecture with red roofs, the west wing has modern architecture.
In 2005, it had 1,593 students
The school was founded in 1921 as Liceu Nacional de Infante D. Henrique during Portuguese rule, it was the only lyceum in Barlavento until around the 1970s when education was improving in the nation. Later, it was probably called Liceu Gil Eanes up to independence, named after a 15th century explorer.
In its early years, it had a huge importance on nationalism in the late colonial years. It once attracted the most intellectual students in its early years.
