The Dutch Eredivisie in the 1986/1987 season was contested by 18 teams. PSV Eindhoven won the championship. At the beginning of the season, AZ '67 from Alkmaar changed their name to AZ.
1 Ajax won the Cup Winners' Cup tournament of this year, so two (instead of one) Dutch teams were allowed to participate in next year's edition: cupholders Ajax and the winner of the KNVB Cup. Since Ajax also won the KNVB Cup, finalists FC Den Haag would be the second participants in Cup Winners' Cup next year.
This year, play-offs were held for one UEFA-Cup-ticket.
