Elaine Welteroth

Elaine Welteroth (born 1987) is editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue.

Welteroth grew up in Fremont California. She graduated from California State University-Sacramento, majoring in mass communication/media studies with a minor in journalism.

Welteroth worked as senior beauty editor at Glamour Magazine and beauty and style editor for Ebony Magazine before joining Teen Vogue in 2013 as beauty editor, the first African American to hold the position.

In May 2016, Welteroth was appointed the new editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, replacing the founding editor-in-chief Amy Astley when Astley left to become editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest. At 29, Welteroth became the youngest person ever to hold the title of editor-in-chief of a Condé Nast publication. She's also the second African American ever to hold that title in Condé Nast's 107-year history. Digital editorial director Phillip Picardi and creative director Marie Suter joined Welteroth on the leadership team at Teen Vogue.

At Slate, Mark Joseph Stern credited Welteroth for developing, in collaboration with colleague Picardi, Teen Vogue as a publication that "treats teenagers like rounded human beings with agency and intellects. The result is a teen glossy with seriously good political coverage and legal analysis, an outlet for teenagers who—shockingly!—are able to think about fashion and current events simultaneously."
