Egelston Township is a general law township (known in other states as a civil township) of Muskegon County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township population was 9,537.
Egleston Township was established in 1859.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.6 square miles (92 km2), of which 35.0 square miles (91 km2) is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2) (1.77%) is water.
Egelston Township, a general law township, is run under a board system of management. Its elected officials include a Supervisor, Clerk, Treasurer and four trustees.
Township Board The 2004-2008 Board consisted of Supervisor Vicky Jenson, Clerk Joan Raap, Treasurer Debra Ackerman, and trustees Walt Bowen, Franklin Fazakerley, Gerald Luttrull, and Bob Whiteman. Most of the officials were elected in 2004 with Debra Ackerman being specially elected to replace Brian Hill.
The current Board consists of Supervisor John Holter, Clerk Joan Raap, Treasurer Debra Ackerman, and trustees Renea Foster, Alex Maginity, Sheila Quillin, and Craig Scott. The newcomers to the current board include Trustees Foster, Maginity, Quillin and Scott. The term ends for all positions in 2016.
Planning Commission The Current Planning Commission consists of Chairperson Todd Lowry, Vice Chair David Covell, Secretary Rob Gustafson, Board Trustee Craig Scott, and Steve Vallier.
Zoning Board of Appeals The current Board of Appeals consists of Dave Covell, Don Darke, Renea Foster, Richard Miller and Sandy Schwab.
Egelston Township Branch, Muskegon Area District Library The current staff consists of Head Librarian Andrew Hammond, Library Assistant Wendy Williamson, Library Substitute Samaria Holbert and Library Page Benjamin Smith.
As of the census of 2000, there were 9,537 people, 3,458 households, and 2,596 families residing in the township. The population density was 272.8 per square mile (105.4/km²). There were 3,643 housing units at an average density of 104.2 per square mile (40.2/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 94.04% White, 1.05% African American, 1.05% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 1.48% from other races, and 2.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.98% of the population.
