Ecclesiastical region


An ecclesiastical region (Latin - regio ecclesiastica) is a formally organised geographical group of dioceses, ecclesiastical provinces or parishes, without a proper Ordinary as such, in Catholic or Protestant Churches.

Apart from historical other uses, there are presently ecclesiastical regions, grouping parts of the extensive episcopate in five Catholic countries, in Italy and both Americas.

The equivalent 'apostolic regions' in France, created in 1961, were suppressed in 2004.

The Roman Catholic Church in Italy, the Pope's home country as Bishop of Rome, is divided into 16 ecclesiastical regions (created in , reorganized in ), mostly corresponding to the 20 administrative regions of Italy (a few being grouped) :
