Duran (glass)

DURAN is a brand name for a borosilicate glass from the German company DURAN Group GmbH and represents the internationally defined type of borosilicate glass 3.3 (DIN ISO 3585). This glass had been developed by Otto Schott in 1887. In 1938 the brand DURAN was subscribed at the Reichspatentamt and registered in 1943.. Because of its very high resistance to heat and temperature changes, as well as high mechanical strength and the low coefficient of expansion, DURAN, which is similar to Pyrex from Corning, is not only used for laboratory devices (e.g. components of chemical devices, beakers, Erlenmeyer flask, etc.) but also in cathode ray tubes , transmitting tubes or speculums.

Besides laboratory glassware, Duran is used in many industrial processes like heat exchangers or in electronic components. Apart from its strong heat resistance, Duran has an excellent corrosion resistance, a high transparency in the visible and infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum and is a strong electrical insulator. The smooth surface is easy to clean.

Duran is currently available in hollow glass products. It is either formed by a molding process into final glass products like Erlenmeyer flasks or drawn as a tube. Such tubes are typically a semi-finished product for further processing, which provide higher precision in its cylindrical geometry and better optical clarity than molded hollow glass wear.
