The name of the genus was introduced by the German naturalist Friedrich Boie in 1826. The word Dryobates is from the Greek druos meaning woodland and batēs meaning walker. Some taxonomic authorities, including the American Ornithological Society, continue to place the American species in the genus Picoides. Other taxonomic authorities continue to place the other species in the genus Dendrocopos.
