Drama High: The Incredible True Story of a Brilliant Teacher, a Struggling Town, and the Magic of Theater, or simply Drama High, is a 2013 nonfiction book by The New York Times Magazine writer Michael Sokolove, based on true events in a high school in Pennsylvania.
Before controversial shows move on to high school theater programs, they are tried out at Harry S Truman High School, led by teacher Lou Volpe, whose students go on to become renowned and respected in the entertainment industry. In one such group of students are couple Brandon and Justin, the former of who publicly wishes to viewed as heterosexual, and sporting players Zach Philippi and Bobby Ryan, who despite being ridiculed, act under Volpe's direction.
Journalist Sokolove observes and writes about a season spent at Harry S Truman High School examining the school's drama program, led by Lou Volpe, who in the last 40 years has revolutionized the theater program in Levittown, Pennsylvania, a blue-collar town that has been on a slow economic downswing since the 1960s. Truman has become known for its drama program, thanks to Volpe, whose productions draw not only critical acclaim but also the attention of famous theater producers.
In January 2017, NBC ordered a pilot from Jason Katims based on Sokolove's novel. Katims will write the script, and also serve as an executive producer alongside Jeffrey Seller, Michelle Lee and Flody Suarez. The pilot was ordered to series with the title "Rise" on May 5th, 2017.
