After graduating from high school, he moved to Florida to train as a wrestler. He traveled to south Florida to Global Championship Wrestling where he met workers such as Tom Nash, David Heath, Rusty Brooks, Dr. Red Roberts, and Boris Malenko. Allen would begin his training with Cliff Sheats (a.k.a. Cliff Anderson) in Fort Pierce. Learning the basics in an old WWF ring purchased by Sheats. This did not pan out and Allen moved back to Cherry Hill, New Jersey in December 1987, where he took a job as a transit-man for a Survey Company. While working in Deptford Township, Allen saw a WWA Flyer promoting wrestling at the Woodbury National Guard Armory. He attend the show and found out the show was booked by "Pretty Boy" Larry Sharpe, who also ran the Monster Factory. In October 1988 Allen went to the Monster Factory in Paulsboro for an open tryout. Waiting through 27 prospective wrestlers, Allen spoke to Sharpe and explained that he had trained in Florida but had to move back to New Jersey. Sharpe gave Allen a tryout match against Anthony Durante (a.k.a. Pitbull #2). After the match, Sharpe offered Allen a match. Allen accepted and found out the match was just three days later against veteran Larry Winters. Allen was given the gimmick of Dennis Condrey, Jr. a reference to wrestler Dennis Condrey, best known as a member of The Midnight Express and began training at the Monster Factory while wrestling for Sharpe's WWA promotion. After a few months Allen changed his name to Dynamite Dennis Allen after a brief confrontation in Philadelphia involving promoter Dennis Coralluzzo and Dennis Condrey. Allen wrestled with numerous Monster Factory students such as: The Pitbulls, Ray Odyssey, Johnny Hot Body, Tony Stetson, Mark Boswell, Joe Daniels, Sonny Austin, Chief Thunder Mountain, Hoss, Frank Angel and Jungle Jim MacPherson. Allen would help in future students training including Tatanka, The God Father, and 911 (Al the Sledgehammer during his tenure at the Factory.
