The Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs (DG HOME) is a Directorate-General of the European Commission. The role of the body is to ensure the EU's security, aiming to create an area of freedom, security and justice. It promotes police cooperation (through Europol) to combat terrorism, organised crime, trafficking of firearms, human trafficking, child abuse and sexual exploitation.
It works through an Internal Security Strategy, part of the European Security Strategy, and also deals with border management (through Frontex), civil protection, disaster management and the creation of a common EU migration and asylum policy.
As well as a "shared resources" directorate (budget, human resources, etc.), the directorate-general has five functional directorates:
DG HOME was created in 2010 when the DG Justice, Freedom and Security was split into DG HOME and the Directorate-General for Justice.
