General Hospital is the longest running American television serial drama, airing on ABC. Created by Frank and Doris Hursley, who originally set it in a general hospital (hence the title), in an unnamed fictional city. In the 1970s, the city was named Port Charles, New York. The series premiered on April 1, 1963. This is a list of notable characters who significantly impacted storylines and began their run, or significantly returned, from the years 1963 to 1969.

Lee was a lawyer who helped defend Jessie Brewer (twice), Edward Quartermaine, and Julie Devlin over the years. He married Meg Bentley in 1966 and adopted her son, Scott Baldwin. Their marriage was rocky as she thought Lee was cheating on her. He was regrettably forced to institutionalize his wife. By 1971, Lee was thrilled to welcome Meg back from the mental institution, supposedly recovered from her mental breakdown. Now, Meg suffered from a severe case of hypertension. Dr. Lesley Williams, a strikingly beautiful doctor, was assigned to her case at General Hospital. The jealous Meg began to suspect—wrongly—that Lesley was trying to work her way into Lee's bed! During an argument with Lee, Meg suddenly died of a fatal stroke in 1973. Lee was devastated, but remained strong for Scotty. Lee Married Caroline Chandler (Augusta Dabney) in 1975. She died in an accident in 1977. He married Gail Baldwin in 1979. In 2004 Lee and Gail are last seen at the funeral of their long time friend Lila Quartermaine.

Dr. Thomas "Tom" Baldwin Sr. is a fictional character from the ABC Daytime soap opera, General Hospital. The role was originated by Paul Savior in 1967. The character was presumably killed off in 1972, but brought back on canvas in September 1976, portrayed by Don Chastain, who left in 1977 amongst a large number of cast changes that occurred when Irving and Tex Elman took over as head writers.
