Detective William Murdoch

Maureen Jennings (born 1939) is a Canadian writer. She was born on Eastfield Road in Birmingham, England; she spent her formative years there until emigrating to Canada at the age of seventeen with her mother.

She is best known as the author of the Detective Murdoch series, which has been turned into a television series, Murdoch Mysteries.

Jennings says that stories of John Wilson Murray, a Victorian era detective who was appointed as Ontario's first government detective in 1875, "was an important inspiration" for her, and led to the development of the character William Murdoch.

The Murdoch series has also been expanded into a series of stage plays, the most recent one Death In A Black Suit, premiering November 2014 at the Scarborough Village Theatre.
