Derek Ashworth Denton AC FRS (born 27 May 1924) is an Australian scientist known for his research exploring the nature of consciousness in animals.

He is the founder and Director Emeritus of the Howard Florey Institute, Honorary Professor at the University of Melbourne, a consultant at the Baker Research Institute. Denton's latest book is The Primordial Emotions: The Dawning of Consciousness.

In 1987 he was awarded the Macfarlane Burnet Medal and Lecture by the Australian Academy of Science for his lifetime's work and in 1999 elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London He was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2005 for leadership in medical research.

Derek Denton has been married since 1953 to Dame Margaret Scott.
