Delta Sigma Rho (ΔΣΡ) is a coeducational secret society at Vassar College. The year of founding is usually reported as 1922, when a group of eight seniors gathered secretly one moonlit night outside of Rockefeller Hall to pour libations and chant to the school's founder, Matthew Vassar. The club's first president was Mary Elizabeth Cannon, class of 1923. It is based on Cannon that the club formed its stringent criteria for selecting members, who must conform to the model virtues of a well-educated Vassar woman: intelligent, connected, and ambitious. The club operated straightforwardly as a forensics honors sorority through the 1940s.
