The Delhi University Students Union, generally abbreviated as DUSU, is the umbrella Students' union at the University of Delhi.
DUSU is the representative body of students from most Delhi University Colleges . Each college also has its own Students' union to which elections are held every year. Several of the office bearers of DUSU have gone on to hold public office at the State and Centre level.
DUSU elections have allowed some members to step directly into local and national politics. Arun Jaitley, current finance minister, was a member of DUSU. The University of Delhi has a long history of student political activity. Since 1954 in DUSU , there are caste based politics taking place especially by ABVP and NSUI which field mostly Jat, Gurjar or Yadav candidates for important posts in DUSU.
The main contestants for the presidential post were Rajat Choudhary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Rocky Tuseed of the National Student Union of India (NSUI), Parul Chauhan of the All-India Students Association (AISA), and independent candidates Raja Choudury and Alka. Elections to the student body were held on 12 September. Arul Chauhan, a final year student from Satyawati evening college was the face for president post from AISA. Aditya Baibhav, student pursuing Master of Arts from the North campus contested for the post of Vice-President. While Jaishree from Kirori Mal College (KMC) was nominated for the post of Secretary and Akash Gupta, LLB student from law faculty for Joint Secretary.
Although, the RSS backed Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarti Parishad(ABVP), Congress’s Nation Student Union of India(NSUI) have not disclosed the list of post wise candidates like every year. However, the left wing student organization All India Student Association (AISA) has announced the list of final faces for the upcoming DUSU election. The Left party which has always taken gender sensitization as a major poll agenda has decided to field woman candidate for the post of president as earlier. The administration made public the final list of candidates on 6th of September. The DUSU election was held on 12th September.
