Criminal Shadows: Inside the Mind of the Serial Killer is a book by David V. Canter which had originally unravelled in the year 1992 (hardcover) under a different title - Criminal Shadows : detecting rapists and killers by Hutchinson and has since won 2 literary awards - one for Non-Fiction (1994) and the other for best True Crime (1995).

Based on the true incidents of a 1980s unsolved murder in Staffordshire, this book describes the work of David's own personal experiences while working alongside the local Law Enforcement Agency, in order to access the difficulty in associating a connection of the criminal with their crime and its victim (who was an 8 year old little girl), wherein the murderer goes about avoiding detection for over 11 years.

It also journeies along the progresses made from the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit and its methodology with which they constructed a consolidated database on criminals. Although, initially the book emphasises over its numerous acts of brutality, it later also focuses on Canter and his understandings with the police teams in-charge of solving these crimes as well.
