Cream, based at the Nation nightclub in Liverpool, is one of the best-known night clubs in the world. Cream began life as a weekly house music night at Nation, and ran in this format for over 10 years, from October 1992 to June 2002. Over the ten years of weekly Saturday nights at Nation, the club played host to many international DJ superstars, including Paul Oakenfold (who was resident DJ throughout 1997 and 1998), Paul van Dyk, Carl Cox, Sasha, Roger Sanchez, Graeme Park, Nick Warren, Brandon Block, Pete Marvelous, Andy Weatherall plus early exclusive DJ sets from The Chemical Brothers.
CREAM was founded by Andy Carroll, James Barton and Darren Hughes as a place to party with friends and family . Cream's opening night took place on Saturday October 17, 1992, when special guest Fabi Paras joined Paul Myers and Paul Bleasdale on the decks. Week two Andy and James graced the decks and made regular appearances for many years.
Andy was already an established Liverpool DJ who had been resident at Brady's (ex. Eric's), The 'legendary' State where he met James, then The Underground, Quadrant Park and The 051. James Barton heard Andy Carroll and Mike Knowler playing the new sound of 'Acid House' in the late 80's and put a night on called 'Daisy' which was the first city centre fully dedicated 'House' music night in Liverpool. It was on a Monday night and was an instant success overnight . After the police closed the State down for crimes of acid house e.g. any excuse to stop the evil sound, James went on to open The Underground with John Kelly and Billy Hughes . The Underground club eventually suffered a similar fate to The State .During this time Mike Knowler and Andy Carroll went on to establish the countries first legal all-nighter after much success at The Quad ( Quadrant Park) . With more hours to fill, Andy and Mike invited James Barton and John Kelly to DJ with them in the all-nighter and indulge in a phenomenal time in rave history. James and Andy had been working together on many projects from when they first met at The State and after The Quad had closed went on to launch The 051 in Liverpool city centre as DJ's, bookers and general consultants. It was a roaring success with many cutting edge firsts for Liverpool re their DJ and artist bookings . As things weren't working out internally with the club directors, James and Andy set up a stunning first birthday line-up and then left to set up Cream with their old pal Darren Hughes who they first met at Quadrant Park.
