The counties of the Russian Empire were administrative entities below the governorates.
The official Russian term was uyezd. In the Baltic governorates the terms Kreis and Hauptmannschaft were used. In the Duchy of Poland powiat. Adjectival form in German was used too, e.g. Hauptmannschaft Windau or windauische Hauptmannschaft.
In the Courland Governorate Kreis and Hauptmannschaft were the German terms.

The uyezds of Bessarabia Governorate were called Ținut or Județ in Romanian.
In Ukraine uyezd was known as povit (Ukrainian: повіт).
