The Contributions Agency was a former executive agency of the United Kingdom. It was set up in 1991 to administer National Insurance, and was an agency of the Department of Social Security. The Agency was absorbed into the Inland Revenue in 1999 and ceased to be an Executive Agency at this time.
Employing over 9000 staff, the creation of the Agency was an early product of the landmark 1988 report, "Improving Management in Government: The Next Steps." For this reason it was referred to as a "Next Steps Agency."
