Contemporary Herpetology is a non-profit, electronic, peer-reviewed journal for articles of a herpetological interest, including biology, ecology, physiology, conservation of reptiles and amphibians. It was co-founded in 1997 by Joseph B. Slowinski, Travis W. Taggart, Jeffery Demuth, and Brian I. Crother all faculty/graduate students at Southeastern Louisiana University. It went online at http://vmsweb.selu.edu/pcsd4805/ on January 1, 1998.
Slowinski was the editor-in-chief until he died in 2001. Joseph Bernardo has been the current editor-in-chief since 2002.
In 1998 the journal was reported as indexed in Zoological Record and Current Contents and it has remained in the list of journals monitored for inclusion in Zoological Record.
