Coachella Valley Unified School District

The Coachella Valley Unified School District is a public school district in Riverside County, California, United States, with headquarters in Thermal. The District serves a 1,250-square-mile (3,200 km2) area , including the city of Coachella, a portion of Indio, south of Avenues 48 or 49, and Salton City in Imperial County..

The CVUSD headquarters is located at 87225 Church St., Thermal, CA 92272. The district accommodates a fast-growing population of the area, which is predominantly Hispanic (over 80% of CVUSD students, excluding those from seasonal migrant laborers) and residents from Coachella are a large portion of students in the high school.

The CVUSD has 14 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and 3 high schools, plus one continuation high school and one special school for teenage mothers. The oldest schools in CVUSD include: Coachella Valley High (joined the CVUSD in the 1960s when created out of Coachella Public Schools). Palm View opened in 1939, Bobby Duke and Peter Pendelton schools opened in the 1940s, and Valley View school opened in the 1950s. Mecca and Oasis schools were county schools, so was Kokell school in Thermal, they joined the CVUSD in the 1970s.

On November 6, 2012 voters in the Coachella Valley Unified School District were asked to support Measure X, a bond issue which will provide funds to upgrade technology infrastructure and provide all 18,000 students in our district with an iPad, in order to support CVUSD’s Strategic Plan.

CVUSD’s Strategic Plan combines technology with new approaches to education, enabling a more personalized learning environment. The Mobile Learning Initiative addresses the following student capacities:

Measure X was developed by CVUSD as a Mobile Learning Initiative recognizing that our students live in a very different world, requiring additional skills than their parents and grandparents. CVUSD students will have a competitive advantage if, by intelligently using technology in the classroom, we help our students achieve the skills necessary to live successfully in the 21st Century.

"Measure X .... establishes a Citizens Oversight Committee to ensure that the revenue is spent only on what is spelled out on the ballot. And bond measures are subject to annual audits by independent CPAs."

"This is a smart plan and should increase the learning capacity of students who need it most and possibly launch a quantum leap for connectivity in the east valley. Vote yes on Measure X."
