Classic Drummer is an American biannual magazine that focuses on the music, playing styles, instruments and careers of music's most influential drummers. It was founded in 2001 by current managing editor and partner Billy Jeansonne along with his brother, Bruce Jeansonne, under the name Vintage Drummer. In 2005, as coverage of more contemporary artists increased, the magazine was renamed Classic Drummer. This change reflected the new focus on drummers of any era whose playing style was classically human and artistically inspired, in contrast to the more mechanical and digitally driven techniques required in much of the drumming of modern-era music.
In 2013, the publication was purchased by current publisher and editor-in-chief Steve Bryant, and is also supported by partners Ron Tongue and Kevin Bryant. Melissa Braswell serves as the creative designer, and Michael Vosbein manages artist relations and content development.
The magazine is home to The Classic Drummer Hall of Fame, which has paid tribute to scores of influential artists over the years, as voted by readers, artists, and industry colleagues. Each year, a new class of inductees is announced in the magazine, then included in the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame website, honored with customized Hall of Fame awards, and commemorated in the annual Hall of Fame edition of the publication.
