City View is a neighbourhood in College Ward in mid-town Ottawa, Canada. It includes a small subsection referred to as St. Claire Gardens. It was the first established neighbourhood within the city and formerly located in the city of Nepean before amalgamation.
Settled by farmers in the first half of the 1800’s, it was part of the Merivale Farming Corridor. There are a few heritage homes still remaining from this time. The stone homes were built using quarried stone right from their City View farms. The Scott’s family built 21 Withrow Avenue in 1842. In the early 20th century it became the home of a “Confederate Poet”, William Wilfred Campbell, who named it “Kilmorie”. His poems were part of the curriculum in many Canadian Schools, one such poem of his is “Indian Summer”;
The crimson forest stands
And all the day the blue-jay calls
Throughout the autumn lands.”
The majority of homes were built on large lots between the 1940’s to the 1950’s. City View became a police village in 1954 until it joined the Township of Nepean in 1974.
City View is a neighbourhood of primarily single-family homes with a very diverse feel; every street has both older and some newer homes. The sizes can range from small and quaint to very large and elaborate with many different architectural styles and influences. An outstanding characteristic is an abundance of mature trees, with large yards and gardens that allow this established suburban neighbourhood to be abundant with birds and wildlife.
The community is located between Meadowlands Drive, Merivale Road, Baseline Road and Woodroffe Avenue (excluding Ryan Farm). According to the Canada 2011 Census, the population of this area was approximately 3,321.[2] The neighbourhood is right next to Algonquin College, and includes Elizabeth Wynwood Alternate High School (which took over the City View Public School Building), St. Julian of Norwich Church (formerly St. Richard’s Anglican Church), City View United Church and Faith Ottawa Lutheran Church. It is also home of the Nepean Museum, Starwood Nursing Home and City View Retirement Community, on Meadowlands Drive.
City View has a number of small parkettes: City View Park, Doug Frobel Park and Bassano Park. It has an active community association, www.OurCityView.ca
The City View Curling Club is on the other side of Merivale on Capilano Drive.
