Christine Benvenuto


Christine Benvenuto is an American freelance journalist and author. She became known for her books about her experiences with Jewish orthodoxy and her marriage with a transgender partner.

Christine Benvenuto grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and finished her education with a BA at Sarah Lawrence College.

She had been married to Joy Ladin for more than 20 years. Currently, she lives with her husband, Harvard economist Stephen Marglinden and their three children in New England.

Benvenuto is the author of Sex changes: a memoir of marriage, gender, and moving on. In this autobiography she presents her experiences living in marriage with a transsexual wife.

In The gentile woman in the jewish world, another autobiographical narrative, she presents and discusses the difficulties of a "shikse", a non-Jewish woman within an orthodox Jewish family.

"In Shiksa Benvenuto traces the history of non-Jewish women in Jewish society from Biblical times to the present. Many of the famous women of the Torah, including Joseph's concubines Bilhah and Zilpah, matriarchs of four of the twelve tribes of Israel, as well as Hagar, Rachel, and Ruth were gentiles."

She is also author of a great number of short stories, articles and reports in Moment, Mothering, Massachusetts Review, Poets & Writers, Tikkun, Gettysburg Review, Village Voice, and the San Francisco Chronicle
