Chillwave

Chillwave (originally called "glo-fi" or "hypnagogic pop"; also "dream-beat") is a style of music characterized by a faded or dreamy retro pop sound, mellow vocals, a low-to-moderate tempo, escapist lyrics about the beach or summertime, psychedelic or lo-fi textures, effects processing (reverb especially), vintage synthesizers, and other attempts to loosely emulate 1980s electronic pop aesthetics as well as engage with notions of memory and nostalgia. Sometimes regarded as a "made-up" genre, the movement's vanguard was represented by Neon Indian, Washed Out, and Toro y Moi, who gained critical attention through what was termed the 2009 "Summer of Chillwave".

Coinciding with the economic turmoil of the late 2000s and early 2010s recession, chillwave was one of the first music genres to develop by being linked and defined through various outlets on the Internet rather than geographic location. The style draws from elements in dream pop and shoegaze, as well as the work of artists such as Panda Bear, Animal Collective, and lo-fi musician Ariel Pink. The term "hypnagogic pop" was coined at virtually the same time as "chillwave" to describe similar artists. Other elements related to drug-induced mind states and idyllic summer fantasies were drawn from the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson. Washed Out's 2009 track "Feel It All Around" remains the genre's definitive and best-known song.
