Chester is a town in Dodge County, Wisconsin. The population was 960 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated communities of Atwater and East Waupun are located in the town.

A post office called Chester was established in 1847, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1918. The town was named after Chester, Massachusetts.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 34.4 square miles (89.1 km²), of which, 33.2 square miles (86.0 km²) of it is land and 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²) of it (3.54%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 960 people, 280 households, and 211 families residing in the town. The population density was 28.9 people per square mile (11.2/km²). There were 291 housing units at an average density of 8.8 per square mile (3.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 87.92% White, 9.38% African American, 1.04% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.62% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.54% of the population.

There were 280 households out of which 36.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.9% were married couples living together, 4.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.6% were non-families. 21.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.08.
