Cape town supply dams

Cape Town is supplied by 6 major dams and 8 minor dams. The major dams provide 99.6% and the minor dams 0.4% of the combined storage capacity respectively. This circuit is part of the Western Cape Water Supply System and is linked by interconnecting pipelines.

The levels of these dams are recorded and published in weekly reports.

As at June 2017, the Western Cape is in one of the worst drought periods in modern history with steadily declining rainfall. Various social media and special interest groups have taken up awareness initiatives regarding the water crisis. This dry period has been forecast to be between 3 and 5 years (2020-2023) and water saving projects include sinking boreholes into the Table Mountain Aquifer and the fast-tracking of Reverse Osmosis Desalination plants to convert seawater to potable water.

Dam levels are published by the South African Department of Water and Sanitation for every dam in South Africa.
