Kolkata Improvement Trust formerly Calcutta Improvement Trust and simply C.I.T. is a statutory body under the Urban Development Department of the Government of West Bengal. It is the oldest urban development agency of Kolkata.
The Calcutta Improvement Trust was set up in the year 1912, following a recommendation from a Government appointed commission and public opinion, with the purpose of expansion and improvement of Kolkata. In May 2011, The Municipal and Urban Development Minister of Bengal announced that the KIT would be merged with the KMC.
The KIT was set up in 1912, as a statutory body for the implementation of the Calcutta Improvement Act of 1911, whose primary goal was the improvement and expansion of Kolkata. The basic objectives of the trust included opening up the congested areas, constructing or altering roads, providing ventilation through open spaces, constructing new buildings, acquiring land for urban development and rehabilitating the displaced communities.
