Cabinet of South Africa

The Cabinet of South Africa is the most senior level of the executive branch of the Government of South Africa. It is made up of the President, the Deputy President, and the Ministers.

The Cabinet consists of the President, as head, the Deputy President and ministers. The President appoints the Deputy President, ministers and deputy ministers, assigns their powers and functions, and may dismiss them. The President may select any number of ministers from the members of the National Assembly, and may select no more than two ministers from outside the assembly.

A member of the Cabinet is appointed by the President to be the leader of government business in the National Assembly. That leader is currently Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.

On 24 May 2014, Jacob Zuma was inaugurated as the President of the Republic of South Africa for his second term in office. Shortly after, on 25 May 2014, he announced his new cabinet. While some ministers from the previous cabinet have retained their posts, most of the cabinet is made up of either new appointments, or in other cases, previous cabinet ministers have been shifted new portfolios. There are a total of 35 ministerial portfolios in the cabinet.
