Butyl nitrite is an alkyl nitrite made from n-butanol. Butyl nitrite is used recreationally as poppers.

Synonyms include 1-butyl nitrite and nitrous acid, butyl ester.

It can be prepared by reacting nitrous acid (generated in situ by reacting a metal nitrite with a mineral acid) with n-butanol.

Butyl nitrite is highly flammable.

Butyl nitrite is one of the compounds used as poppers, an inhalant drug that induces a brief euphoria. Among the inhalant's common street names are "liquid rush" (or just "rush") and "locker room." It is sometimes marketed as "liquid incense."
