Brynhildr in the Darkness (極黒のブリュンヒルデ Gokukoku no Buryunhirude?, lit. "Extreme-Black Brynhildr") is a science fiction Japanese manga series by Lynn Okamoto that began serialization in Shueisha's seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump in January 2012. A television anime adaptation by Arms began airing on April 6, 2014. It is based on Germanic mythology.
Ten years ago, Ryouta Murakami along with his childhood friend Kuroneko set out to search for signs of alien life. However, during their search, a tragic accident occurs which gravely injures Ryouta but kills Kuroneko. Devastated by her death since that day, Ryouta vows to fulfill her promise by continuously looking up at the night sky, trying to prove that aliens really do exist.
Presently, Ryouta is now a top student at his school and is the sole member of the school's Astronomy Club. He then gets the shock of his life when a new transfer student named Neko Kuroha arrives in his class. Despite bearing a striking resemblance to Ryouta's dead childhood friend, she dismisses the fact as bluff. However, Ryouta finds out that there is something amiss about Neko. She somehow aces a difficult test to transfer into and doesn't know her multiplication tables. Most of all, she possesses superhuman strength and strange abilities. She can even predict when someone is about to die. It is then revealed that Neko is a witch who escaped from an alien research lab.
After displaying supernatural strength in saving his life, Ryouta becomes a part of Neko's life, learning more about her past and about the hidden forces that exist in the universe. As he sinks deeper and deeper into a world of magic and artificially created witches, Ryouta must allow his unique, scientific mind to embrace the fact that Neko possesses a special power which some forces will stop at nothing to get a hold of.
The institute meaning "witch castle" is the Organization that unearthed aliens in Germany by gold miners and a Japanese geologist (Ryouta's great-grandfather) in 1910, but never made it a public discovery, instead began the top-secret research over it to accomplish God's destruction. In conclusion of World War II, they moved to Japan and gained secluded authority. Sorcerian, research no. A008; and Loki are kept in incubator chambers for the uprising fate of humankind.
