Summer Olympics appearances (overview) | |||||||||
Brunei competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's seventh appearance at the Summer Olympics. Brunei failed to register any athletes in two editions of the Games: 1992 in Barcelona and 2008 in Beijing.
Three Bruneian athletes received their spots to compete only in track and field and in badminton by wild card entries. Sprinter Mohamed Fakhri Ismail was selected to carry the Bruneian flag in the opening ceremony. Brunei, however, has yet to win its first ever Olympic medal.
Brunei received universality slots from IAAF to send two athletes (one male and one female) to the Olympics.
Brunei received an invitation from the Tripartite Commission to send a badminton player in the men's singles event, signifying the nation's Olympic debut in the sport.
