Brisbane Blades


The Blades are a men's Australian field hockey team, representing Queensland in the Australian Hockey League.

The Blades have been the most successful team to play in recent years. Their home ground is the State Hockey Centre at Colmslie in Brisbane, Queensland.

They have also competed under the name Brisbane Baldes. And between the years 1993-2000, Queensland also provided a second team in the National Competition, the North Queensland Barras.

The team were champions in the 2007 AHL final played in Perth, Western Australia on 1 April 2007, beating the WA Thundersticks.

In 2010 the Queensland Blades defeated the New South Wales Waratahs in the AHL final to win the championship.

The 2011 season will see the Queensland Blades start favourites, after comprehensively winning the 2010 title. With the likes of four time world hockey player of the year Jamie Dwyer, and Australian Representatives Liam De Young, Robert Hammond, Jason Wilson, Matthew Swann, Timothy Bates, Nathan Burgers, Matthew Ghodes and Mark Knowles, the Blades line up will be hard to beat.

The line up will also include some of the states most talented youngsters, who are tipped for big futures in the game. Jacob Whetton leads a talented group of these younger players which will likely include Jake Farrell, Peter Dillion and Ryan Gibbs.

New additions to the squad for the 2011 season, include talented midfielder Craig Smith added to the squad after standing out in the Brisbane Hockey League and the Queensland Premier League over the past two seasons.

2011 should also see the return of Scott Richards,Shane Kenny, Andrew Newman and Ryan Gibbs who were all unavailable for the 2010 finals after sustaining injuries.
