Turning professional with Portsmouth in 1986, he made his mark as a striker the following year after moving to Cheltenham Town. In 1988 he joined via Derby County, before signing with Southend United in 1990. Impressing at the club, he won a move to Everton four years later. In 1995 he transferred to Sunderland, after spent part of 1996 on loan at Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion, before he returned to Stockport later in the year. Successful in his second spell with the club, he was loaned out to Notts County and Preston North End, before ending up at Walsall in 2000. Two years later he joined Queens Park Rangers via Rushden & Diamonds and Port Vale. He retired in 2003 having scored 200 goals in 540 games, in all competitions. He was appointed head coach NewZealand side Hawke's Bay United in September 2014.
