Boyer Brothers, Inc., is a candy company located in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The factory is located in the downtown district.

Boyer Brothers Inc. was founded by brothers Bill and Bob Boyer in 1936. During the years of the Great Depression the brothers started a chocolate business within their own kitchen to supplement their family's income. Although the business was started up by the two brothers, the entire family provided a helping hand. Their sister, Emily, and their mother did the wrapping as Bill was making the candy. Bob would then go door to door selling the candy. They initially began with homemade fudge and nut raisin clusters, but started to offer more varieties as the demand for their candy became more popular.

After those early forays into the candy business, Boyer became notable in the late 1940s for Mallo Cups, a cup-shaped candy consisting of a whipped marshmallow creme center covered with chocolate.

The company was acquired by American Maize Products, a company that specializes in the manufacturing of corn. In June 1984 American Maize sold the company to Anthony Forgione, a New York entrepreneur and founder of Consolidated Brands. The company still operates from its original plant located in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Later, the company expanded its line to include Smoothies, a peanut butter center covered with butterscotch confection, and Peanut Butter Cups, a peanut butter center covered with chocolate. The company also produced other short-lived cup candies such as Fluffernutter, a mixture of marshmallow and peanut butter covered in chocolate.

"Play Money" Program

The Play Money program is a program that gives the consumers a coin, printed on the cardboard package insert, ranging from five cents to one dollar in each candy bar. The coins are used by consumers to redeem free candy and/or prizes from Boyer's catalog. This program is currently still in effect today. The Play Money Program was implemented due to the increasing demands for the cup candy. Prizes include T-shirts, hats, cups, free candy or even a $2.00 rebate.
