Boehmantis microtympanum is the sole species of the frog genus Boehmantis, in the mantellid subfamily Mantellinae.
Boehmantis microtympanum was originally described in the genus Mantidactylus by Fernand Angel. The species was transferred to its own genus, Boehmantis, by Frank Glaw and Miguel Vences.
This species is endemic to Midongy du sud National Park and Andohahela National Park, in southeastern Madagascar. Its natural habitats are rivers and streams within subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, and degraded forest.
Boehmantis microtympanum is currently considered Vulnerable by the IUCN due to its limited range, and ongoing habitat destruction.
