In the Soul Reaper Research and Development Institute, the members discover that two worlds are colliding. After Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki defeat a hollow, they rescue and send a plus soul off to the Soul Society. Taking his unattended body under custody of local paramedics, Ichigo and Rukia successfully flee.

As they encounter unidentified ghost-like spirits in Karakura Town, a mysterious Soul Reaper named Senna appears and destroys them. At the same time, Kon meets a shadowy figure with the dark armor. While Rukia returns to the Soul Society in search of answers, Tōshirō Hitsugaya and Rangiku Matsumoto inform Ichigo about the mysterious reflection for world collision. Kisuke Urahara explains that the dimension between the Soul Society and the real world is colliding with the Valley of Screams, expanding connecting points. The spirits seen earlier are the "Blanks", a group of amnesiac souls lost in the space between worlds and that they comprise the Valley. Their memories combine to form a single entity, the "Shinenju". Kisuke instructs the assembled Soul Reapers to find it, before the mysterious group. Ichigo asks Senna to learn the truth about the blanks, but she refuses. She goes to the cemetery and encounters the group, before Ichigo fends them off. After Ichigo and Senna reunited Tomoya with his father, the officers of Gotei 13 identify Senna as the real Shinenju and orders Ichigo to hand her over, but he refuses. The mysterious group called the "Dark Ones", exiled members from the Soul Society seeking revenge for the past, arrives and captures Senna. They head to the Valley of Screams and attach her to a device powered by the Blanks causing the Valley to collapse, along with the real world and the Soul Society. Rukia goes to get reinforcements, but Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto plans to destroy the Valley and refuses to order a rescue mission with a few hours.
