Black Water (also known as Submerge) is an upcoming action thriller film directed by Pasha Patriki, and starring Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. The film centers on Wheeler, a deep cover operative, who awakens on board a submarine to find himself imprisoned by the Central Intelligence Agency. Although Van Damme and Lundgren have worked together previously, Black Water will mark the first time they appear together as on-screen allies.
Black Water was announced on December 30, 2016; with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren being said to co-star, although a director was unconfirmed at the time. Van Damme and Lundgren first collaborated on Universal Soldier (in 1992). Since then, they've appeared in two sequels together: Universal Soldier: Regeneration (in 2009), and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (in 2012); as well as The Expendables 2 ( also released in 2012). According to screenwriter Chad Law, Black Water “came together” when producer Richard Switzer: “called me up and said he wanted to do an action movie set on a submarine. That was it really… and we took it from there." Law and Switzer had collaborated with Lundgren when filming the action thriller Altitude (in 2017). Law also wrote Six Bullets (in 2012) "specifically" for Van Damme, after being hired by producer Brad Krevoy.
Production was completed by March 31, 2017.
