Black Umfolozi River

The Black Umfolozi River is one the two tributaries to Umfolozi River in KwaZulu Natal. It flows through Swart-Mfolozi, Ceza Nongoma and eventually confluence with the White Umfolozi near the South-Eastern boundary of Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game-Reserve to form the Umfolozi River.

The River is called "black" because of the dark (black) stones along its course. In IsiZulu, Imfolozi emnyama. Imfolozi - means "Zig-zag" which is the pattern the river follows along its course. This river forms Upper Umfolozi (Enhla neMfolozi) - Lower Umfolozi is the area where the two tributaries have confluence. EMpangeni and Mtubatuba are two major areas related to the Lower Umfolozi region.

Zwide, chief of king of the very powerful Ndwandwe tribe had his own domain north and east of the Black Umfolozi River.
