Later in the 2013–14 season, Engels went on to score three more goals against Genk,Zulte Waregem and Lokeren. Despite being on the sidelined, due to injury and suspension, Engels continued to be in the first team regular and finished the 2013–14 season, making thirty–five appearances and scoring five times in all competitions. For his performance this season, Engels was nominated for the Young Professional Footballer of the Year, but lost out to Youri Tielemans.
