The Bishops' Blue Coat Church of England High School is a secondary school in Chester, United Kingdom. It is an academy and the current Headteacher is Mr Ian Wilson. The School is an affiliated school of the Woodard Group of Schools.
The Bishops’ Blue Coat Church of England High School was founded in 1984 after an agreement between Cheshire County Council and the Church of England. The Bishops of Chester and Birkenhead were instrumental in the school’s foundation.
The Bishops’ High School is the only Anglican secondary school in the Cheshire West & Chester Local Authority and at present one of only two within the Chester Diocese. The other, Sir Thomas Boteler Church of England High School, is in Warrington.
Since 1984 the school has grown in size. Today around 1,060 attend, including 160 sixth form students. A massive investment in new buildings and facilities has accompanied this growth in numbers.
The results of a consultation between 14 December 2010 and 13 January 2011 indicated a clear majority of parents, staff and the wider community to be in favour of the school applying for Academy Status. The Bishop of Chester, the Diocesan Board of Education and the Blue Coat foundation expressed their support for the change of status, and The Bishops' Blue Coat C of E High School became an Academy on 1 April 2011.
In 2015, 68% of A Level students obtained A* to C grades. 76% of GCSE students achieved 5+ A* to C grades.
The school has 5 main buildings.
These buildings include:
The school also possesses a building solely used as an assembly hall, and is currently constructing a new "humanities" block. A £1.6 million sixth form building is currently under construction.
The school is set in extensive and landscaped grounds, the largest of any school in Cheshire, close to the River Dee. Each subject has its own suite of specialist rooms and further planned development will provide more facilities in the coming years.
Facilities include:
Sports at the school include handball, rock climbing, cheerleading, volleyball and fencing. In addition, the school has a Concert and Training Band.
