The Big Mound City site is the largest prehistoric Native American earthwork in southeastern Florida. Dating from the late Mississippian Period (circa 1450-1500 AD), it is a combination of at least 23 mound structures and an embankment complex, including radiating causeways and crescent-shaped man-made ponds. Of the mounds, some have been identified as being burial mounds.
