Battle of Romania

The Battle of Romania in World War II comprised several operations in or around Romania in 1944, as part of the Eastern Front. The Red Army launched a major offensive against combined German-Romanian defenses in an attempt to completely reclaim the territory of the Moldavian SSR and access a way into the Balkans, known as the Jassy-Kishinev Offensive between August 20 and August 29, which ended with a Soviet victory. During the offensive, Romania joined the Allies, something that Romanian historian Florin Constantiniu claims shortened World War II in Europe by six months. The German Sixth Army was encircled and destroyed for the second time, while the severely depleted Eighth Army retreated to Hungary.

According to historian David Glantz, another Soviet offensive, which he refers to as the First Jassy-Kishinev Offensive, took place between April 8 and June 6, but ended in failure as the Axis forces successfully resisted the invasion.
