Basnet/Basnyat (Nepali: बस्नेत/बस्न्यात) is the surname of a particular Hindu family of Nepal. Basnets were part of Thar Garh aristocracy group which assisted the rulers of Gorkha Kingdom. Basnets are also considered as one of the four noble Kshatriya families who were involved in direct politics together with Shah dynasty, Pande and Thapa before the rise of Rana dynasty.Basnyat family, the last Kshatriya political family was wiped out by PM Jung Bahadur Rana during the Bhandarkhal Massacre.
Basnyat of Shreepali clan rose during rule of King Prithvi Narayan Shah in the Gorkha Kingdom. Senapati Badabir Shivaram Singh Basnyat was the son of Jayaram Singh Basnyat, a Shreepali Basnyat of Gorkha.
There are five different branches of Basnets in Nepal:
Shivaram Singh Basnyat, the commander of Gorkhali forces belonged to Shreepali Basnyat clan. He was son of Jaya Ram Singh Basnyat. The Shreepali Basnyats migrated to the Gorkha district of Nepal from current Uttarakhand state and Himachal State of India before King Prithivi Narayan Shah United the country Nepal. They worship "Sishakoti Mahadev", "Veerabhadra", "Mahakali" as their Kul Devta and Aradhye Devi "Dakshinkali" as Ishta devta. During the unification of Nepal, the Basnyats had grown in power and remained in such a position until the emergence of Jung Bahadur Kunwar, later known as Jang Bahadur Rana.
