Barnsley local elections


One third of the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council in South Yorkshire, England is elected each year, followed by one year without election. Since the last boundary changes on 3 June 2004, councillors are elected from 21 wards.

Since 1973, political control of the council has been held by the following parties:

Since 1973, all of the Leaders of BMBC have come from the serving Labour group: Brian Varley (1973-1975); Ron Rigby (1975-1976); Fred Lunn (1976-1985); Ron Rigby (1985-1988); Hedley Salt CBE(1988-1995); Jeff Ennis (1995-1996); Sir Stephen Houghton CBE (1996- ).
